A page for residents following traffic changes on Frontera Road at the Sunland Park–El Paso border, where the City of El Paso is carrying out street modifications through fall 2026.

The City of Sunland Park is working toward a solution that benefits residents on both sides of the state line, and will post updates here as they become available.

Where construction stands

El Paso began construction in June 2026, with the project expected to take about four months. This bar reflects the overall window the City of El Paso has announced, not a confirmed completion date.

The project

What's being built on Frontera Road

The plan is designed to separate through-traffic by state: New Mexico-bound traffic is routed onto New Mexico streets, and Texas-bound traffic stays on Texas streets. Pedestrian and bicycle access is maintained throughout.

How we got here

Project timeline

2022–2024
▸ Traffic concerns raised
Growth on the Sunland Park side of the border, including new residential development, increased traffic on Frontera Road. El Paso residents along the road raised concerns about congestion and safety, and the city began studying options.
February 2026
▸ El Paso approves funding
El Paso City Council approved $340,000 for design and construction of a diagonal diverter and emergency-only access gates on Frontera Road. Design work began shortly after.
June 2026
▸ Construction begins
Construction started on the diverter and access gates. El Paso estimated the work would take about four months to complete.
August 24, 2026
▸ Sunland Park hosts public meeting
The City of Sunland Park held a public meeting to answer resident questions and share the latest updates on the Frontera Road project.
September 1, 2026
▸ City Manager report to Council
The City Manager will provide an update on this project during City Manager Reports at the September 1 Council meeting. This page will be updated afterward.

For residents

What this means day to day

Frontera Road is not open through traffic.

Drivers can no longer pass straight through on Frontera Road. Detours are required to get around the construction and access points.

Plan for extra travel time.

Detour routes add time to trips through the area. Drivers should plan accordingly while construction continues and while the new traffic pattern takes effect.
