Fire Suppression and Extinguishment
Activities necessary to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property when a fire starts.
Rescue
Activities that provide rescue for fires and other emergency situations. These situations include specialized rescue such as mountain rescue, water rescue. and trench rescue.
Life Support
Activities, in coordination with other emergency organizations, that prevents the unnecessary loss of life or complications of injury in the case of accidents or sudden illness.
Hazardous Conditions Mitigation
Activities that prevent or minimize the loss of life and property from hazardous conditions such as natural disasters caused by high winds and flooding. hazardous building situations, and hazardous materials releases.
Public Assistance
Activities that contribute to the general health, safety and welfare of the community as may be determined by the Fire Chief or higher authority.

What do I need to become a Sunland Park Firefighter?
- Minimum of 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- NM Class E Driver’s License or Equivalent
- Firefighter I & II Certification with IFSAC Seal
- HazMat Awareness & Operations Certification with IFSAC Seal
- NM EMT License or obtain Reciprocity within 12 months of employment

Where can I find information on open burning or how to obtain a burn permit?
When requesting a burn permit, the station officer will verify that the weather will allow open burning and if it is a burn day, fire personnel will conduct a site visit to the location and if all conditions meet the requirements, they will issue a burn permit on site. The permit is only good for the day it is issued. You may receive a citation if caught illegally burning without a permit. Permits are issued on the day they are used and are 1-day permits. Permits are valid only within the city limits.

How do I obtain a copy of an EMS or Fire incident report?
Please call 575-268-6224, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm to request a copy of a report. Please have the incident address and the date ready. You will need to complete a Request for Inspection of Public Records in person with the City Clerk’s Office prior to the release of any report.

Yes, Sunland Park Fire Department personnel will check your blood pressure free of charge if they are not on another emergency call.

What should I do if my fire alarm or carbon monoxide alarm sounds?
Evacuate yourself and your family immediately and then call 911. The Fire Department is highly trained and uses advanced technological equipment to help them determine the reason for the activation and to ensure peace of mind for you and your family to reoccupy your home. Sometimes the activation may not be what you think, and you could put yourself and your family at risk by not dealing with it. Remember, it is never a bother for the Fire Department to come and check your home in any event.
What should I do if I smell natural gas, whether inside or outside?
Natural gas leaks can be dangerous and are to be taken seriously. Don’t activate any ignition source, such as turning on a light, lighting a match or turning on the stove. Evacuate yourself and your family immediately and then call 911 to report the odor. The Sunland Park Fire Department will be dispatched to your home to assess the severity of the situation by using special gas detectors.
