Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino was full of matching team shirts, big smiles, and plenty of costumes on Saturday morning, October 3, as the community came together for the 11th Annual Walk/Run for Kids. Presented by Ronald McDonald House Charities of El Paso and sponsored by the City of Sunland Park, the event invited participants of every age and pace to take part in a 5K run or a 1-mile walk.

A Race With a Purpose

Proceeds from the Walk/Run for Kids support seriously ill children and their families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House in El Paso while a child receives medical care at an area hospital in El Paso or Las Cruces. Every registration, donation, and step on the course helps keep those families close to their children when it matters most.

Race Morning

The 5K run started at 7:30 AM, followed by the 1-mile walk at 8:15 AM. Teams lined up together on the track, and participants crossed under the start/finish arch with the grandstands and blue skies behind them. Medals were awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each age group, from 12 and under to 70 and up. Participants who could not make it in person also had the option to walk or run virtually from anywhere.

Fun for the Whole Family

Beyond the course, the morning had something for everyone. A live DJ kept the music going, vendor and community booths lined the grounds, and costumed characters and mascots stopped for photos with kids and families. Participants also competed in the event challenges, including Best Pet Costume, Best Team Costume, and the Largest Team Trophy. Local titleholders were on hand to cheer on participants and pose for photos throughout the morning.

Thank You, Sunland Park

The City of Sunland Park thanks Ronald McDonald House Charities of El Paso and everyone who helped make the morning possible, along with every runner, walker, and family who came out to support this cause. Events like this are a reminder of what our community can do when we show up for one another.

See You Next Year

Thank you to everyone who laced up, cheered on, and showed up for families in our region.
