City Asks Residents to Stay Away from the Rio Grande Levee
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 30, 2026
SUNLAND PARK, N.M. — The City of Sunland Park is asking residents to stay away from the Rio Grande levee completely while flooding from the river continues. This includes the River Levee Park and Trail near Racetrack Drive, which is closed to the public until further notice.
High water, strong currents, and saturated ground along the levee and riverbank can be dangerous and can change quickly. The closure is in place to protect the public and the crews responding to the flooding.
What Residents Should Know
- Please do not walk, bike, drive, or gather on or near the levee.
- Please do not enter the River Levee Park and Trail.
- Please keep children and pets away from the levee and the water.
- Please follow posted signs and any instructions from City staff and emergency personnel.
The City will share updates as conditions change, including when the levee area is safe to reopen. Residents can find the latest information at www.sunlandpark-nm.gov and on the City's official social media channels.
The City thanks the community for its understanding and for helping keep everyone safe.
